WORDPRESS TUTORIALS
Introduction
Optimising images before uploading them to WordPress can significantly impact your website’s loading speed. Uploading large image files without optimisation will make your website load slower.
Optimising your images has several other benefits, including improving your Google rankings and faster website backups.
Image optimisation uses compression technology to deliver images in the smallest file size without reducing the overall image quality. For example, when optimised correctly, an image can be up to 80% smaller than the original without any loss in quality.
Outside of image editing software such as Photoshop, there are several powerful free image optimisation tools online to optimise images in just a few clicks. Online compression tools aim to find the perfect balance between the smallest file size and good image quality.
This step-by-step guide will show you how to optimise your images using ShortPixel in less than two minutes.
DIFFICULTY: EASY
Step-by-Step
ShortPixel offers simplicity and easy-to-use buttons to choose your image compression type. There are numerous extra tabs for advanced features. But, in most cases, you can go with the default settings.
In the video below, we use example images on our computer to show you how to optimise and reduce file sizes using ShortPixel. The files should be a maximum of 10MB.
ShortPixel allows the choice of three compression levels:
- Lossy Compression (Recommended) – Lossy is the best option for most users. The images processed in Lossy mode achieve the smallest image file size possible. Lossy has the best balance between optimisation and picture quality.
- Glossy Compression – Glossy is the best choice if you still care about loading times on your website but believe that a slight loss of page speed is an acceptable compromise for high image quality
- Lossless Compression (Not recommended) – Lossless optimised images are pixel-by-pixel identical to the originals, but they offer a minor size reduction compared to either Lossy or Glossy processed files.
